Practical Assessment (80%): This method has been chosen for the overall programme to ensure that learners acquire and demonstrate the essential skills and competencies required for nursing practice. The practical assessment will take place in both simulated clinical environments and actual clinical practice setting during work placements. The assessments will be conducted using Observed Structured Clinical Exams (OCSE) and direct observation by registered nurse assessors.
Each module will have tailored practical assessments aligned with the specific learning outcomes and content of that module. For example, in the mental health nursing module, assessments will focus on evaluating competencies in mental health nursing practice.
A list of competencies for assessment will be developed for each module to guide students and assessors. These competencies will be based on the scope of professional nursing practice as established by EU Directive 2013/55 and the Malta Council of Nurses and Midwives’ standards.
Formative Assessment:
Throughout the programme, students will have opportunities for formative assessment and feedback to support their learning and preparation for summative assessments. These formative assessments include in-class assignments, discussions, and case studies.
The formative assessments aim to provide students with regular feedback on their progress and allow them to identify areas for improvement before the summative practical assessments and reflective journal.
Reflective Journal (20%): The reflective journal component will be assessed at the end of the modules. Students will use the reflective journal to document their experiences, insights, and personal growth throughout the programme.
The reflective journal will be marked by tutors and will provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate their critical thinking, ethical considerations, and understanding of the practical applications of nursing principles.
